About Umbria

Umbria is small, the only Italian region without coastline or an international border, and covered in dense forest and hilly terrain. But Umbria is home to more culinary treasures than many of its larger, more well-travelled neighbours. The combination of Apennine foothills, beautiful medieval hill towns and vast swathes of woodland make Umbria one of the most beautiful regions of central Italy. Umbrian cuisine, whose roots lie in the civilization of the Romans, is following a long tradition, essentially based on products from the earth. The frequent use of local legumes and cereals is the core of the regional cuisine, enriched by cured meat, pork, and truffles. The hilly landscape, fringed by the snow-capped Apennines produces tannic, age-worthy reds from Sagrantino di Montefalco. The companion white grechetto, is dry, crisp and ready to be enjoyed while young. Other varieties include canaiolo, sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and trebbiano spoletino.
