About Valle d’Aosta
Located on the northwestern border of Italy, Valle d’Aosta is the most mountainous region in the country. Unlike much of Italy, the mountains and very cold winters in this area result in a hearty cuisine of filling starches and rich dairy products, with Fontina being the most famous cheese. The exceptional red wines of the area to try are nebbiolo and pinot nero, as well as little-known petit rouge and the versatile white variety prié blanc, great in the sparkling or still version. Other varieties include fumin, moscato and petite arvine.
